AdU Falcons Snag Second Victory

Paul Gonzalgo dropped a crucial three-point bomb with 1.6 ticks remaining, frustrating the UE Red Warriors in their first face-off for UAAP Season71, 66-64, last July 20 at the PhilSports Arena, Pasig City. That triumph marked Adamson’s 2-2 rank, which incidentally is also the current standing of the UE Red Warriors—the previous UAAP season’s runner-up.

Jan Colina contributed a team-high 15 points to the AdU team, including six straight, which enabled the Falcons to subsist during the Warriors’ 4th-quarter comeback.

Gonzalgo, son of former PBA star Dante Gonzalgo of Ginebra, triggered 12 shots, while Galinato delivered 9, Olalia 7, Yambot, 7, Cañada 6, Santos 4, Agustin 2, and Alvarez 2.

“I consider this as an upset because we all know that UE is one of the contenders,” said Coach Leo Austria to local sports correspondents. Austria is a former PBA star himself, and winner of the top rookie honors in 1986.

UE players tussled as they tried to crawl back, 52-43, during the third quarter after the San Marcelino-based squad continued to fire as Michael Galinato tacked the quick pass of Marc Agustin with 7:14 left during the last frame, securing AdU’s lead.

“Our offense and the execution of our plays were good. The players really wanted to win,” added Austria.
